Vattikuti Digital Breast Diagnostic Center
The Vattikuti Digital Breast Diagnostic Center at Beaumont offers state-of-the-art digital equipment for breast screening and detection. The technology offers considerable advantages in accuracy over traditional imaging machines. Most users of the technology employed report increases of 10% to 15% in the detection rate, said Dr. Murray Rebner, director of the Vattikuti Digital Breast Diagnostic Center. The center also features diagnostic support including computer-aided detection (image checkers) and a computer program for double reading mammograms to ensure accuracy.
Beaumont is one of the premier healthcare leaders in the United States that exclusively uses digital mammography for initial screening examinations. Advantages of digital imaging over traditional film images include:
- A higher-contrast resolution for clearer, larger and sharper images.
- Women with dense breast tissue make up 45 percent of all women screened and, using digital technology, images of this dense tissue can be enhanced and examined in greater detail with better precision.
- Digital mammography demonstrated a 70 percent detection rate of suspicious areas compared with only 55 percent for conventional film-screen technology.
- Manipulation of the image to increase visibility, avoiding additional “spot films” that increase the patient’s exposure to radiation.
