Former Vattikuti Fellow Saves a Kidney

Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital recently had such a unique case- they made a video about it. Several surgeons at different hospitals were presented with a woman with serious pain and debilitating symptoms, all due to a tumor placed between major arteries and a kidney. None were even willing to try to save her kidney. She and her husband went to see Former Vattikuti Fellow Dr. Santoshi Nagaonkar, now Director of Urology, Urological Oncology and Robotic Surgery for Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital.
The tumor was fortunately benign, but had to be removed. Other surgeons offered open procedures, none would attempt to save the kidney- for them, it was too difficult. Dr. Nagaonkar felt confident that it could be done robotically, saving the kidney- and offering his patient a much faster recovery. The decision to proceed was given.
The video documentary, produced by the hospital tells a complete story , portraying the initial discomfort, early consultations, decision to have robotic surgery, all the way to the final outcome. While it is promotional, it is also uplifting, because it shows other patients -and surgeons, what is possible with surgical robotics in the hands of a good robotic surgeon.
The surgery was successful, his patient went home after 5-days inpatient, and has resumed her normal life.
Here is the YouTube link to the 12-1/2-minute video:
We congratulate Dr. Santoshi Nagaonkar for his fine work- and thank him for sharing it with us!
