The VUI was established in 2001 by the Vattikuti Foundation at Henry Ford Hospital with the purpose to further research in prostatic cancer and robotic surgery. Dr. Mani Menon, the Raj & Padma Vattikuti Distinguished Chair of the V U I, invented the Vattikuti Institute Prostatectomy (VIP), a robotic surgery procedure that has become the most common approach for the treatment of prostate cancer in the United States.Since the inception of the procedure, they have done over 7,800 robotic procedures, providing care to patients from all 50 states and 23 countries. Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery is utilized at the VUI in the management of renal and bladder cancer, adrenal diseases, pediatric urological disorders, and female urological diseases.

Dr. Menon and his team have pioneered many robotic procedures over the past fifteen years and have completed over 10,000 cases dealing with prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and pediatric urology. Patients have come from across the United States and all over the world to participate in cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures that have improved their lives.

The Vattikuti Urology Institute has two locations where surgery is performed: the original in Detroit at the Henry Ford Hospital and also at the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, one of the most innovative medical facilities in the United States. The VUI is known globally for the superior training, procedures, staff, and patient care that have evolved over the years under Dr. Menon's leadership.
