The Hershey Medical Center of Penn State University has elected to drop their kidney and liver transplant programs. Both programs had previously been suspended, due to the Organ Transplantation and Procurement Network (OPTN), a national association and oversight group, declared Penn State a "member not in good standing," in 2022, due to unsatisfactory outcomes and procedures. Despite recent attempts to overhaul the programs, and reinstatement by the OTPN, the University decided to end kidney and liver transplants this week. This does not affect other transplant programs, including cardiac transplants. Patients awaiting transplants will be directed to other programs.
