Effective Method to Re-use N-95 Respirator Masks Safely

Date : January 5, 2022

Thanks to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, some hospitals around the world are finding it difficult to obtain N-95 respirator masks needed to protect their medical staff. These masks are the recognized standard of safety globally. Stony Brook University (State University of New York at Stony Brook), has published results of a study on how to safely sterilize and reuse these masks. It involves heating the masks for 60- minutes in a dry oven at 80-degrees C, or heating them for 30-minutes at 100-degrees C. Both treatments were found to be effective in killing the COVID-19 virus, which had been placed upon the masks. Other methods, including using an autoclave to sterilize the masks were not as successful, in part due to destroying the fit of the masks. The results were published in the journal PLOS ONE.
