Technology Detail Information

Development of Vattikuti Institute Prostatectomy, with assistance of the da Vinci Surgical System, started in the year 2000 at the Vattikuti Urology Institute (VUI) at the Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, marking the beginning of a new era of Computer assisted surgery. Over the past 2 decades, the Vattukuti Foundation has championed the cause of enhancing precision in surgery and improving patient outcomes. The VUI designed and established several surgical procedures which are now the standard of care across the globe.

The Foundation's efforts in India established a powerful multispecialty da Vinci surgery program, creating four cobranded institutions, training 500 surgeons and developing a network of 80 installations. 10,000 multispecialty procedures are performed every year. The da Vinci (and other new surgical robots) function by transmitting actions of the surgeon’s hands to the surgical target through the tremor filtered precise movements of delicate surgical instruments.

Subsequently, the VF helped introduce Computer-assisted joint replacement surgery by establishing centers of excellence for Mako robotic surgery (the first time in India). Even now, the field of surgical robotics has been getting more diverse. The advancements in cloud computing, big data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) have paved way for new generations of intelligent decision support tools and automatic robotic surgery. We are fast approaching an era of robotic surgery where robots could either perform preprogrammed tasks, or learn from its own experience through feedback. The technology section of the Foundation works to bring the latest news in this growing field to educate surgeons as well as the patients.

da Vinci Xi Surgical System

 

The da Vinci Xi® is the latest robotic surgery system from manufacturer Intuitive Surgical.

The da Vinci® Surgical System is the most recognized robotic surgery platform in use today.  Thanks to the research initiated at the Vattikuti Urology Institute at Henry Ford Hospital by Dr. Mani Menon, the da Vinci® Surgical System has become the preferred tool for numerous procedures and specialties. First known for providing surgeons and patients benefits for the robotic prostatectomy, it is now used for renal tumors and transplants, bariatric, cardiac, head & neck, thyroid, colorectal and many other specialties.

Dual Console Systems

 

An available second console allows two surgeons to collaborate during a procedure. Dual console systems are effectively used in training new robotic surgeons, who observe mentoring surgeons during a live procedure, or be monitored and assisted while performing whole- or portions of robotic procedures.

TilePro

 

The Intuitive 'TilePro' system enables the surgeon to view additional information in the surgeon console viewfinder from additional sources during surgery below the 3D image.

The TilePro multi-input display allows the surgeon and the OR team to view 3D video of the operative field along with up to two additional video sources such as ultrasound and EKG.

Firefly Fluorescence Imaging System

 

The Firefly Fluorescence Imaging System allows the surgeon to highlight important anatomical and blood flow points through near-infrared light visualization.

Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery

Stryker is the manufacturer of the Mako orthopedic robotic system. From the website: Mako enables you to have a more predictable surgical experience when performing joint replacement surgery. The current Mako System offers Partial Knee, Total Hip and Total Knee applications. Patient-specific pre-operative plan enables more accurate implant positioning.3-7 CT data is segmented to create a 3D model of the patient’s bony anatomy. An individualized pre-operative plan is created and reviewed with you prior to the Mako procedure.


Stryker is the manufacturer of the Mako orthopedic robotic system.  From the website: Mako enables you to have a more predictable surgical experience when performing joint replacement surgery. Yomi

 

 

Yomi is a Dental robot manufactured by Neocis. It is designed to augment the dental surgeon in placement of dental implants. da Vinci SP

 

From Intuitive Surgical, manufacturer of the da vinci Surgical System, comes a new, single-port robot, compatible with the da Vinci X console. Details from the press release: The da Vinci SP system provides surgeons with robotic-assisted technology designed for deep and narrow access to tissue in the body. The ability to enter the body through a single, small incision helps surgeons perform more complex procedures. Intuitive anticipates pursuing further regulatory clearances for da Vinci SP, including transoral, transanal, and extraperitoneal applications, broadening the applicability of the SP platform over time. It is expected to see the first release in the third quarter of 2018, according to published reports.

The da Vinci SP system includes three, multi-jointed, wristed instruments and the first da Vinci fully wristed 3D HD camera. The system enables flexible port placement and excellent internal and external range of motion (e.g., 360-degrees of anatomical access) through the single SP arm. About the da Vinci Surgical System

This year (2019) medical giant Johnson & Johnson acquired Auris Health, manufacturer of the Monarch robotic platform. ROSA was recently acquired as part of the purchase of French firm Medtech.

From +MASS Device: Medtronic plans to launch the Hugo system in undisclosed places outside the U.S. early (in 2020), allowing the company to start gathering clinical data. SVB Leerink analysts after the meeting said Medtronic’s entry into the soft tissue robot-assisted surgery space represented a significant opportunity for growth — not only for Medtronic but also for Intuitive Surgical because it represented an expanding market. The Hugo system includes a tower, surgeon console, surgical end effectors, and robotic arm carts.
