Study Questions Radical Hysterectomy for Low-grade Cervical Cancer

7 March 2024

A New England Journal of Medicine article suggests that women with low-grade cervical cancer (stage 1B1) may not need a radical hysterectomy, but instead are within recurrence rates of those who underwent a simple hysterectomy. The February 29 NEJM article Simple versus Radical Hysterectomy in Women with Low-Risk Cervical Cancer studied a randomized group of 700 patients, concluding in part: "...simple hysterectomy was not inferior to radical hysterectomy with respect to the 3-year incidence of pelvic recurrence..."
