Former Vattikuti Fellow Tackles Watermelon-Sized Tumor

25 JULY 2024

It’s not very often that tumor surgery makes the news, but this is what happened recently for former Vattikuti Fellow Dr. Mohammed Basheeruddin Inamdar, assisted by his colleagues at Burjeel Specialty Hospital, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

Dr. Inamdar was presented with a 63-year-old male patient with an abdominal extension, caused by a tumor, which had been growing for 8-years. Because he was afraid to have surgery, he dealt with the growing problem until it was not possible to live with the pain it was causing any more.

Prof Humaid Alshamsi, CEO of the Burjeel Cancer Institute, referred the patient to Dr. Inamdar. After a consultation with colleagues, surgery was performed. It took a reported 5-hours, due to the complicated location and nature of the tumor.

“The large size of the tumour, occupying all quadrants and its long-standing nature, required meticulous planning and precise execution. The mass was compressing major vessels, including the aorta and IVC, and had multiple sources of blood supply, which we carefully managed. The entire multidisciplinary team played a crucial role in the successful outcome,” said Dr. Inamdar. (Courtesy: Khaleej Times)

The Khaleej Times reported that the patient “experienced a dramatic improvement in his symptoms post-surgery. His leg swelling reduced significantly by day four, and he was discharged from the hospital on the sixth day, returning to a normal diet.”

In addition to the quote above from the ‘Khaleej Times,’ Dr. Inamdar posted to LinkedIn: “Extremely Satisfied and grateful patient and family, he lost more than a quarter of his body weight literally… I am thankful to my colleague in Urology Dr Omar, Medical Oncology colleagues Dr Prasanta, Dr Mehdi, anesthesia and radiology Colleagues. Team work can lead to excellent Outcomes!”

Dr. Mohammed Basheeruddin Inamdar served his Vattikuti Fellowship under Dr. Somashekhar S. P. We congratulate him on this successful procedure. Here is the link to the complete news article:
