Ancient Chinese medical practitioners used to study tongues to decipher diseases. Now, researchers at the Middle Technical University and the University of South Australia have been successful in doing the same thing, but using an AI-based program connected to a video camera. It is an Iraqi-Australian collaborative effort.
MTU and UniSA Adjunct Associate Professor Ali Al-Naji and team, have loaded over 5,000 images of tongues into an Artificial Intelligence model of their design. The AI has the ability to match the color of the tongues to tongues of those with known diseases, aiding in swifter diagnosis. The work has been published in journal Technologies.*
Prof. Al-Naji has been quoted by the UniSA: "The color, shape and thickness of the tongue can reveal a litany of health conditions.”
Eventually, the hope is that a Smart Phone App can be developed to make this universally available. For more information, please see the MedicalXpress article
