EAU Telesurgery Standards Published

14 October 2025

Telesurgery- it is the latest topic in robotic surgery- though having been practiced on a limited basis for well over two decades. With the advent of advanced communication networks, there have been many successful robotic procedures across communities, nations, continents- and even device tests on the International Space Station. Hardly a week (or day) goes by without another surgical team or robotic device manufacturer announcing another telesurgery 'first.'

The European Association of Urology has just published their first comprehensive set of guidelines pertaining to Telesurgery in Urology. The 'European Association of Urology Policy on Telesurgery,'* was posted under the label 'Platinum Opinion.' The authors are recognized as thought leaders in the global robotic surgery community. What they have developed is perhaps not earth-shaking, but a well-designed means to assure patient safety and successful outcomes through evidence-based practices.

Here are some key points, according to what the EAU has posted on LinkedIn:
  • Patient safety & ethics first
  • Governance, training, and consent standards
  • Oversight through audits & registries

The EAU policy has "Three Pillars of Telesurgery:"
  • Clinical Governance and Surgical Preparation
  • Interoperative and Team Logistics
  • Postoperative Management and Systemic Considerations
