Robot Assisted Excision of a Large Retrosternal Goiter

This video, presented by Dr. Ashwani Sharma, Associate Director Surgical Oncology and Robotic Surgery, BLK Superspeciality Hospital, New Delhi, was a Finalist in the 2019 KS Robotic Surgery Awards presented at the 2019 Robotic Surgeons Council of India meeting on November 16, 2019, Pondicherry. This is a recording of the live presentation, plus the following discussion.

From the abstract:

Full title : Robotic assisted excision of a large retrosternal goiter with combined cervical excision: A novel minimally invasive approach

Method : 56 years female known case of Multinodular Goiter thyroid, operated 2 decades back for thyroid pathology presented with recurrent neck mass and persistent cough . CECT neck and chest showed large heterogenously enhancing lesion arising from inferior aspect of left thyroid lobe extending into the superior mediastinum. The intrathoracic component measured 11x6x5 cms partially encasing the left brachiocephalic vein. The patient underwent Robotic mediastinal excision of large retrosternal goiter with combined cervical approach thus avoiding a median sternotomy. The post operative course was uneventful and the patient recovered well, and was discharged on 3rd post operative day. The benefits of robotic surgical system are well accepted and were instrumental in excision of this locally advanced anterior mediastinal mass with innovative combined cervical approach.
