Robotic Low Anterior Resection on a da Vinci System

Dr. Somashekhar SP, Chairman- Surgical Oncology, MHEPL, HOD & Consultant Surgical Oncologist at the Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Bangalore, conducted a live surgical procedure at Yenepoya Medical College, July 21, 2018. The patient was a 60-year-old male complaining of rectal bleeding was found to have a 7cm growth from the anal verge upon rectal examination. One reviewer comments: “He has wonderfully demonstrated the dissection in the proper TME plane, taking all the lymphatic tissue along with complete mobilisation.”

Speaking to his medical college audience about the robotic LAR procedure, “There are many techniques of doing robotics,” says Dr. Somashekhar, from the da Vinci Si console. “One is the dual docking, and another is the single docking… What I follow normally, is a single docking, which means the robot and the patient stays in the same position throughout the surgery.”

Prof. Somashekhar explains the reasons for his robotic placement on camera, before proceeding to the surgery itself. He narrates the complete procedure live, from the console, which makes this an excellent training video for other surgeons. He was assisted by Dr. Ashwin KR and Vattikuti Fellow Dr. Abhinav Deshpande.
