Yoga in the Western world often denotes a modern form of hatha yoga and yoga as exercise, consisting largely of the postures or asanas, Yog in its original form is not just a process of achieving physical and mental wellbeing, but a journey from body to mind and mind to soul ultimately liberating oneself from time , space and causation to ultimately culminate into the awareness of one’s own being -an understanding of one’s own self or self-realization.
Evolving self-awareness (mindfulness) through meditation can help to comprehend this state of Being. Rest of the other components of Yog i.e. Asanas (postures), Pranayam (breathing exercise) etc. help you in meditation for the ultimate merger into your own Being.
