Discussion on the Protect Trial

Dr. Percy Jal Chibber is a Consultsant Urologic Surgeon for Jaslok Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital and others in Mumbai. He is also a Past President of the Urological Society of India. He discusses methods of treating and monitoring patients with various prostate cancers “good cancers” versus “bad cancers,” based on four major published studies: ProtecT, PIVOT, SCPC4, and L. Klotz.

According to Dr. Chibber, the most important point was regarding patients places into active surveillance: After 5-years, 30% required further treatment and after 10-years, nearly 60% did. He asks the Robotic Surgeons Council of India: “So the question remains- could these people have been identified earlier- and therefore have been saved, had the window of opportunity have been siezed earlier?” Follow up protocol is discussed, including PSA diagnosis and genetics study to detect dangerous genes as possibilities of driving better outcomes.
