How Do I Compare My Experience of Laparoscopic with Robotic Surgery

Dr. Rajesh Ahlawat is the Chairman, Urology and Renal Transplantation, Fortis Escorts Kidney & Urology Institute, and is one of the leading robotic renal transplant experts in the world. He enthusiastically tells the Robotic Surgeons Council of India that for robotic surgery, “You have to unlearn so many laparoscopic skills!”

Being familiar with anatomy due to his extensive laparoscopic experience- before taking on robotic surgery- was a significant advantage for Dr. Ahlawat. He shares the importance of putting together a Team for robotic surgery, having Proctors early on, and taking the time to study the first procedures as a team to learn where improvements can be made. Speaking of time- he feels that surgeons must allow for “relaxed time,” to successfully complete robotic procedures.

He has many good ideas throughout this presentation. We recommend this video for all robotic surgeons- or those interested in becoming robotic surgeons. (Make sure you stay with this to hear how he compares different surgery types to telephones!)
