The Role of Percutaneous Biopsy in the Management of Renal Tumors
Alessandro Volpe, M.D. was the invited International Faculty for the April, 2017 Robotic Surgeons Council of India (RSC) meetings. He is an Associate Professor of Urology at the University of Eastern Piedmont, Novara, Italy and OLV Robotic Surgery Institute, Aalst, Belgium. He is a robotic urologic surgeon at Maggiore Della Carita Hospital, Novara, Italy. He participated in an EAU published Systematic Review and Meta_analysis of Diagnostic Accuracy of Percutaneous Renal Tumor Biopsy as one of the seventeen authors listed.
Dr. Volpe discusses the “uncertainties- in a very provocative topic”” surgeons face in whether to perform renal tumor biopsies, and some of the reasons to consider performing renal biopsies. He talks about the safe method to perform a biopsy, to prevent “seeding” of tumor tissue. Several different studies were referenced to show how the results of biopsies do help determine cancer types and grades. High grade and low grade tumors are covered in his thorough presentation.
